Alternating Pressure Pads

Attention: open in a new window. | Print |

General Information

Alternating pressure pads (APP) help reduce the potential for developing decubitus ulcers, (pressure sores), in patients confined to bed.  The pads automatically change the pressure points approximately every 2 to 4 minutes by alternately filling and emptying the cells in the pad.

 Maintaining Alternating Pressure Pads

As in all home medical equipment, proper set up and usage is essential to achieve maximum benefit from the product.  Proper function and movement of the pads should be checked daily by placing an open hand on the pad long enough to allow the system to cycle from full to empty.  Inspect the tubing between the pad and the pump daily to ensure connection to the pad.  Make an overall inspection of the pad each time you change the bed linens.

Observe the following general precautions for APP maintenance:

  • Never use pins to attach bedding to the pad.
  • Do not use heating pads or blankets with the APP system.
  • Do not use alcohol or other solvents to clean the pad’s surface.  Clean with a mild household detergent and warm water.
  • Keep the power cord away from hot surfaces and the moving parts of the hospital bed (if used).
  • Place the pad on the bed with the proper side up.  Pads with specific tops and bottoms are clearly marked.
